Two-thirds of executives surveyed in a recent NewVantage Partners report say they find it very difficult or impossible to find or hire data scientists. Faced with such an uphill battle to acquire big data talent, “companies need to identify exactly what they are looking for and then determine if such a person even exists,” according to Steve Maxwell, general partner at NewVantage and author of the report.

Maxwell goes on to identify core competencies a data scientist should possess:

• Data collection

• Data storage/retrieval

• Data manipulation/exploration/cleaning

• Synthesis and model building

• Visualization

• Story telling

The report outlines the core business, data, and analytical skills to look for or develop in a good data scientist, and it provides solid practical advice on acquiring or developing key big data talent.
